ACCESSABILITY
Wheelchair Access & Shop Layout
Words and Actions for Peace is located on the ground floor with easy access from the street. We have a portable wheelchair ramp which we are always more than happy to put out (just tap on the front windows or give us a call prior to coming by). It is 47 inches / 119 cm wide, however the entrance door itself is only 3 feet / 91 cm wide (it is an old house and the angles are wonky).

Most of the WandA space is located on one floor, including the bathroom and a small kitchen, with even floors between rooms. There is a basement accessible only through a set of steep stairs. This basement is mostly used for storage and is also intended for large crafting projects. However, our spacious upstairs rooms offer plenty of space for most small to medium sized crafty projects (for example, a chaise longue has been upholstered here.) Most of our furniture is shiftable, so space can be made in the main room according to your needs.

The doorway to the kitchen is 28 inches / 71 cm wide, yet the kitchen itself is very small and doesn’t accommodate more than one person at a time. Wheelchair access is therefore tricky. The doorway to the bathroom is 26 inches / 66 cm wide, with the bathroom itself being only 32 inches / 81 cm wide. A protruding sink would make navigation on a wheelchair difficult. Accessibility supports like handrails are not installed.

Guidance for individuals with visual impairments
Our staff and volunteers are all very happy to give guidance around the WandA space.
We do not habitually offer large print books or pamphlets but will take on this consideration for the future.

Sound/Hearing
There is no background music on in the WandA space. Sometimes music is played through a small portable speaker which can and will easily be switched off if requested.

We are presently in conversation to install a Hearing Loop or Audio Induction Loop, a form of assistive listening technology that provides a wireless signal that is picked up by hearing aids when set to the ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting.

None of our staff has BSL, however all staff and volunteers are coached to speak loudly and clearly and face visitors to the Words and Actions space when talking to help with lip reading if necessary.

Whiteboard and whiteboard markers for written communication are available.

Seating
There are several seating opportunities available around the Words and Actions space. Most of our seats have back support but no armrests. We also have a comfy chaise longue in our reading corner, freshly re-upholstered by one of our volunteers 😊

Events / Booking the Space
The Words and Actions space offers room for about 40 people, and we can offer seating opportunities for about 35. If you need to sit, please arrive early, and if you have a preference on where you would like to be seated, simply call or email ahead.

We have a microphone with an amplifier (SpeakEasy) that you can use for your events.

Booking Costs: It costs about £40 for us to be open and warm and lit for an evening event, and to have someone to open up etc. so there is a suggested charge of £15 per hour or £40 for an evening or £100 for a day event on Saturday or Sunday for this reason. (If you can pay more, please do, so we can offer space to new groups or for events that don’t have any funds). However, if the suggested price is beyond your means, please talk to us! WandA is intended for community use and we don’t want any lack of funds to stop you using the space, especially for new groups.
